If this fight continues between America’s two political parties, the American people know that one of these two parties will be destroyed and America cannot endure very long under a one party rule. Most every politician in America on the ‘right’ and the ‘left’ has made this same claim at one time or another during their tenure as a ‘career’ politician.
Political ‘hacks’, ‘spin-doctors’ and ‘spin-casters’ for both political parties in America have terrorized some by accusing civilian and military leaders of past administrations of great conspiracies and wrongdoing just to reap political points with a fearful voting public. As Caesar told the Romans in biblical times, Cassius said, “the fault dear Brutus is not in our stars but in ourselves.”
It is necessary to investigate fairly and thoroughly before legislating but the line between investigating and persecuting is a fine one. We cannot confuse dissent with disloyalty. Accusation is not truth and conviction depends upon solid, irrefutable evidence and due process of law. It cannot be guilty until proven innocent. We cannot be driven by fear of one another or we will be driven into an age of unreason.
If we dig deep into our American history and our democratic doctrine we are not descendents from fearful people. We are not descendents from people who feared to write, to associate, to speak and to defend the causes that were for the moment unpopular. This is not the time for those who oppose to keep silent…or for those who approve to keep silent.
We cannot deny our heritage and our history and we cannot escape responsibility for the results. Americans proclaim to be defenders of freedom but we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting freedom at home. Our actions at home have alarmed our allies and given comfort to our enemies. Our fear is created and exploited for political expediency…and rather successfully. Good night…and good luck.
