Americans tend to live and think in the past meaning when they are faced with a totally new situation they may tend to react according to the beliefs and opinions they have always held, instead of trying to accept or adapt to new ideas. This is similar to interpreting the “present” through a rear view mirror, which is like walking backwards into the future.
